This is an appropriate time to tell you about an experience I had during World War Two.
I served in the Armed Guard, a division of the Navy. We were the gun crew aboard Liberty Ships, taking supplies to Europe. We were in the North Atlantic, heading for Antwerp, Belgium.
A violent storm came up with monstrous seas. Sleep was impossible that night. The next morning, we were horrified to see that our lifeboats had been cleanly swept away from their davits. How our ship survived that storm is a mystery.
